Every four years the sporting spectacle that is the Rugby World Cup comes around and captures the imagination of a nation. This year, when the festivities begin the Springboks will be aiming to defend the trophy that they so memorably won back in 2019. Let’s take a closer look at how the 2023 edition is shaping up for the defending champions and how that may affect your strategy if you are considering betting on rugby during the tournament.

When is the Rugby World Cup 2023?
The tenth edition of the Rugby World Cup gets started on Friday 8th September at 8pm. By then the anticipation will be at fever pitch as the first match pits two of the pre-tournament favourites against each other as hosts France take on the heavily backed New Zealand.
The tournament will run until Saturday 28th October when the showpiece final will take place. Meanwhile, South Africa’s tournament begins with a tough match against Scotland on Sunday 10th September in Marseille.
Where is the Rugby World Cup 2023?
The Rugby World Cup 2023 will be hosted by France. This is, of course, bodes well for the Springboks who won the tournament the last time that France hosted in 2007. Matches will be played in nine stadiums across France with the final taking place in Paris’ Stade de France. The other host cities are Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Saint-Etienne and Toulouse.
Rugby World Cup 2023 Pools
The draw for the 2023 Rugby World Cup pools produced a heavily stacked top half, with all four of the pre-tournament favourites in either Pool A or Pool B. This means that only one of South Africa, New Zealand, France or Ireland will make it to the final. The consensus is that New Zealand and France are the two teams most likely to claim the trophy, so it will be interesting to see how the perform against each other in the tournaments opening match.
The bottom half of the draw would appear to be significantly weaker. Given the pre-tournament struggles suffered by both Wales and England, Australia must surely fancying their chances of reaching the final stages. The bottom half of the draw is made even more interesting thanks to the mixed fortunes of Wales in the run up to the tournament. This means there may be an opportunity for Georgia to spring a surprise and qualify for the quarter finals for the first time in their history.
South Africa’s Rugby World Cup 2023 Fixtures
The Springboks’ tournament gets underway on Sunday 10th September with a tough, but winnable match against Scotland. The matchups against Romania and Tonga are very winnable, but it is the match against Ireland on Saturday 23rd September that will be key.
The Irish are on a 12-match winning run, including the Six Nations Grand Slam earlier this year. They are deservedly ranked Number 1 in the world, and this is probably going to be the match that will decide who tops Pool B. Finishing top of the group would likely mean avoiding New Zealand in the next round, so all eyes will be on the Stade de France on September 23rd!
Can The Springboks Win it Again?
The Springboks go into to the tournament as defending champions, and there is every chance they can repeat the successes of 1995, 2007 and 2019. However, some injuries to key players such as Handre Pollard and Lukhanyo Am have threatened to derail the campaign before it has even begun.
The Springboks are, however, serial winners and know what it takes to get the job done. No country has won the World Cup more times than their three, and they also won the tournament the last time it was held on French soil.
In addition to this, the pure physicality of the South African team is well known. Add this to the way they can boss scrums and collisions means that they have a great chance of taking home a fourth crown!
