A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE IRISH LOTTO
Launched in 1988, the Irish Lotto has become a cultural institution in Ireland and is known across the world for being one of the easiest lotteries to win. Originally a 6/36 draw drawn every Saturday night, the Irish Lotto introduced a midweek draw in 1990, expanding players’ chances to win.
The lottery underwent significant changes over the years, notably after a notorious incident in 1992 when a Dubliner named Stefan Klincewicz “hacked” the system. Klincewicz, an accountant with a sharp understanding of numbers, devised a plan to buy enough tickets to guarantee a jackpot win when the payout was sufficiently high. His syndicate’s success led to a revision of the draw’s rules, increasing the number of playable numbers to 6/39 and later to 6/47 in 2015.
This evolution not only made the draw more challenging but also contributed to the growth of payouts, with the highest recorded payout of €18.9 million won by a syndicate in 2008, around R356 million! While this record has not been beaten for a considerable amount of time, the format change in 2015 is expected to result in a record breaking top payout in the future.
The Irish Lotto can also be found in popular culture, most notably the 1998 film Waking Ned, which features a comedic tale of a small village that attempts to claim the payout of a deceased lotto winner. If you're a fan of whimsical Irish humour, or indeed any sort of humour at all, this film is one for your Netflix list!
ODDS OF WINNING THE IRISH LOTTO
The Irish Lotto remains steadfastly popular at home, however, the interest in this lotto extends far beyone the Irish Sea! Obviously there is a huge Irish diaspora around the world, many of whom may bet on the Irish Lotto to keep a connection to their homeland, but there are many more who bet on it simply because it offers such great odds of winning. Let’s look at the numbers:

MOST COMMON IRISH LOTTO NUMBERS*
As you might expect for a lottery that started life in 1988, there have been a huge number of draws in the Irish Lotto. Since that first draw, the most common Irish Lotto have been: 27, 2, 9, 32, 7 and 10. At the other end of the scale, the least commonly drawn numbers have been: 46, 47, 43, 44, 45 and 41.
HOWEVER, when analysing these numbers it is important to bear in mind the changes to the format of the Irish lotto. As it started life as a 6/36 lottery and only expanded to 6/47 in 2015, it is only natural that these higher numbers have appeared less often overall.
