Is Number 7 Really 'Lucky'?
It stands to reason that if a number is truly lucky you’ll often find it in big win combinations. Is this the case with the number 7 that many people claim to be a lucky number?
The largest amount won in SA Lotto history took place in January 2018, when 4 winners won R27,5 million each. Their winning numbers were 6, 7, 15, 21, 24, 48 and Bonus Ball 16.
Here you can see number 7 did occur in the winning combination.
In South Africa’s PowerBall history, the biggest win ever took place in February 2019, when a lucky player in his fifties won a top prize of R232,131,751. This SA Powerball ticket holder's lucky numbers were 14, 18, 21, 25, 35 and PowerBall 5. So, number 7 didn’t help much here.
A truly lucky number will also feature at the top of the list of the most drawn numbers. This is not the case in SA lotteries. So while some players have found their fortunes with the help of Number 7 every other digit can just as likely be your ticket to riches.
So here you have two facts: You don’t need number 7 to get your win because other numbers have the same chance of turning into a win. Secondly you’ll note that number 15 features close to the bottom on a list of most drawn numbers. It still helped four people become millionaires.
The lesson? Any number can help you win
Despite these facts studies have shown it is 25% more likely to be picked than any other number in people's selections. However, the fact that more people are choosing number 7 is probably a good reason to stay away from it: it's no more likely of being drawn than any other, and when more people have the same numbers then prizes will have to be shared more ways.

SA Lotto Common Numbers*
In SA Lotto the lucky number 16 showed up the most times in draws. It’s been drawn a total of 322 times which is 73 times more than number 37 at the bottom of this list. Note that the numbers 50-52 can’t be taken into account in these comparisons since they were only added to the game recently. The other numbers that often occur according to current statistics are 48, 23, 14 and 8.
SA Powerball Common Numbers*
Looking for lucky numbers for Powerball? Here you find number 15 at the top with 189 draws. Number 24, 20, 31 and 36 are also quite common each having been drawn 172 times or more. The least commonly drawn number is 47, having been drawn just 56 times.
US PowerBall Common Numbers*
The most frequent numbers are: 32, 39, 41, 20 and 16. Number 32 has been drawn 280 time. Meanwhile, the least common ball number is 60, although that is due to the number of balls being increased in the last few years and not because number 60 is inherently unlucky!
MegaMillions Common Numbers*
In the MegaMillions draw the more commonly occurring numbers are: 17, 31, 10, 46, 20 and 29. 17 and 31 have both (at time of writing) been drawn 268 times since this lottery was launched. The least common number is 67, having been selected just 57 times.
Irish Lotto Common Numbers*
The most common numbers drawn since the Irish Lotto began in 1988 are 2, 27, 9, 7, 10 and 32. (Though don't forget the Lotto has gone through many changes over the years; a lot of you might well remember it was a 36 number game when it started, but it has since gone up to 47).
All of these statistics are correct for the period from the lottery's first draw until May 9 2024. and as far as 'lucky' lottery numbers go, these are what most people probably look for. Although their frequency individually does not suggest they appear together often. Also, many lottery fans scour statistics like this to choose their numbers, so a PowerBall ticket with 32, 39, 41, 20 and 16 that wins would most likely be shared out amongst a much larger amount of participants.
Lucky Lotto Numbers
Now we don't believe in 'lucky' or unlucky numbers any more than you do. It's just interesting to see which numbers have been most commonly chosen for the different lotteries. At Lottoland we allow you to bet on lotteries, but bear in mind that we are not associated with the official lotteries and aren't selling official tickets.
Got your own "lucky numbers", or are inspired to try one of these winning combinations? Either way, there only way to be in with a chance is by placing a bet on one of the's selection of lotteries available at Lottoland.
*All of the statistics regarding the most commonly drawn numbers are correct for the period from the lottery's first draw until May 9 2024.
