WHAT IS BRAZIL QUINA?
Brazil Quina is one of the most popular lotteries to come out of Brazil – which is no mean feat! In 1994 Brazil’s national bank, Caixa Econômica Federal, introduced Brazil Quina to the world. It became a firm favourite with Brazillians thanks to its super-simple format, and the potential for high payouts. In order to bet on Brazil Quina, punters only need to slect five numbers from a choice of eighty. They will hit a payout for matching five, four, three, or even just two numbers!
The very first Quina draw took place on 13 March 1994, marking the beginning of what would fast become a nation instiution, with participating becoming an almost daily-routine for millions across Brazil. In the years that followed Quina has built a reputation for generating payouts that were not common in Brazil before its inception.
Nowadays it is not uncommon to see the top payoput for Quina to roll into the tens of millions of Brazilian Reais, while the creation of Quina de São João, the annual special lottery, has garnered a huge following in the country thanks to its larger-than-usual payouts.
WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF WINNING BRAZIL QUINA?
Brazil Quina gives its punters multiple ways to win, with four different payout tiers based on how many numbers are matched. The odds of hitting the eponymous Quina (matching all 5 numbers) are 1 in 24,060,016. These odds may seem steep, but it is actually one of the easiest lotteries to win the world! These odds also get significantly better as we move down the different payout tiers.

3 Numbers (Terno) | 866 to 1 | 20% (Shared) | |
2 Numbers (Duque) | 36 to 1 | 11% (Shared) |
Brazil Quina typically begins with a minimum top payout of around R$700,000 (cR223,320), but this has been known to swell significantly with rollovers not an uncommon sight. Additionally, there is no limit on high the top payout can go, meaning that it can roll on, and on, and on! Thanks to this, Quina’s highest ever payout was R$42 million (cR132 million) on Christmas Eve 2019.
WHEN IS BRAZIL QUINA DRAWN?
Aside from its simplicity and payout structure, one of the things that sets Brazil Quina apart from most lotteries is the frequency of its draws. The draws take place not once, not twice, but six times a week! The numbers are drawn every Monday to Saturday at 20:00 in Brazil, which will be 1:00 AM Tuesday to Sunday for us in South Africa.
If you’re tempted to get involved in every draw, then the bet price won’t break the bank either! Coming in at just R15 per bet, the Quina is not only one of the easiest lotto’s to win, but it is also one the cheapest lotteries around!
WHAT IS QUINA DE SÃO JOÃO?
Quina de São João is the special annual edition of the Brazil Quina lottery. It was created back in 2011, designed to coincide with the Festa Junina which celebrates Saint John (São João) each year. In a similar fashion the Mega de Virada and Lotofácil da Independência, the Quina de São João was designed specifically to offers payouts that would be significantly higher than its standard counterpart.
Another quirk is that Quina de São João does not roll over, it must be won on the day of the draw. If no one has matched all five numbers then the top payout is distributed amongst those winners in the next highest prize tier (usually those who have matched four numbers).
Over the past thirteen years Quina de São João has consistently given Brazilian punters some of the biggest payouts the country has ever seen, and the 2024 edition continued this fine tradition! The payout of R$229.9 million (R73.46 million) was the biggest in the history in the history, with three happy winners each picking up R$76.6 million (R24.48 million).
WHEN IS QUINA DE SÃO JOÃO?
Quina de São João takes place every year on 24 June, during the São João festival. Howeverm if the 24th falls on a Sunday then the draw may be moved to the next day. The special draw follows the exact same rules and format as the standard draw, only the payouts are much, much bigger!
